Apollo 11 Moon Footprint – Free Cross Stitch Pattern

Moon Footprint free cross stitch pattern header

This post marks the first of what I hope will be a long series of free cross stitch patterns, released on the first of every month. You will be able to see past patterns by clicking the category ‘cross stitch patterns’ under ‘free stuff’ on the sidebar or CLICK HERE.

It was the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 this year, the first time humans had stepped into the moon. Thanks to the thin atmosphere there is no wind to blow away their footsteps left behind.

If you stitch this or any of my patterns contact me via email or social media and I will feature you!

How to mount embroidery in a hoop free tutorial- sewing method

How to mount embroidery in a hoop - sewing method.png

There are many ways of mounting your embroidery and other textile work for display and in this series I will teach you my favourites.

Embroidery hoop – sewing method – YOU ARE HERE

Embroidery hoop – glue gun method [coming soon!]

You will need:

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 1

  • Finished embroidery, ironed
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Tapestry needle (sewing needle might be required if you are backing with something thicker and tougher than felt)
  • Thread, two strands  (I use leftover thread/floss from that project)
  • Felt sheet
  • Pen/fabric marker (felt tip markers are not advisable as they may show through the felt)
  • Scissors (that I forgot to include in the photo!)

Tutorial

First disassemble your hoop and draw around the outside of the inner (solid) hoop onto the back of your felt.

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 2

Cut out the felt circle and set aside.

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 3

Next center your embroidery over the inner hoop and press the outer hoop over it, positioning the screw at the top of the piece.

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 4

Turn the hoop over and press both hoops so they are level against your work surface. Holding the hoops down with one hand pull the spare fabric taught across the front of the hoop, tightening the screw as you go. Don’t pull too hard or you may uncenter your work.

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 5

When tightening the screw the materiel between the two ends of the outer hoop bunches together. Pull the fabric tight to smooth out the lump.

Embroidary mounting - sewing hoop - part 6

When the screw is tight and your embroidery is taught as a drum you can either cut the excess material off, leaving an inch of material away from the hoop or leave as is, tucking the excess into the center of the hoop.

Embroidery mounting - sewing hoop - part 7

Take your circle of felt and thread your needle with the thread.

Embroidery mounting - sewing hoop - part 8

Place the felt circle on the back of your piece and stick the needle in about half a centimetre away from the edge of the felt. Make sure you have gone through both felt and Aida/fabric then come back up through fabric at the edge of the felt.

Embroidery mounting - sewing hoop - part 9

Tie your thread to the loose end and begin stitching the felt circle to the back of your embroidery. It is easiest to work the needle away from the center of the hoop.

Embroidery mounting - sewing hoop - part 10

When you have finished the round tie the needle thread to the starting thread and thread the needle with both strands. Insert the needle into the felt and bring it up without going through the front fabric. Snip the thread close to where it comes out of the felt.

Embroidery mounting - sewing hoop - part 11

Finished!

Hello folks!

Surprise, I’m not dead! It’s been a difficult year but now I am ready to reopen my shop again. I’ve had a change in direction, focusing on designing rather than the production of physical items. But you can still buy my jewellery if you visit me at Jacobs Well Country Market in Jacobs Well, Surrey. The market is in the Village Hall every Friday between 10 and 11:30am.

Though my Folksy shop I will be selling digital beading and cross stitch patterns, emailed to your inbox within 24 hours after you have paid. In the future I hope to sell physical items, both made items and kits.

I will be opening my Folksy shop in a week’s time, Thursday 1st August, just in time to organise some last minute crafts to do on holiday!

Hippie Otter Designs Folksy shop will open 1st August!

Keep an eye on my Twitter for more updates and details.

Bird Box to Beach Hut

beach-hut-bird-box-blog-title

My Dad loves beach huts. He has coasters with them on, his diary/scrap book has them on, whenever we see them on the TV he always exclaims that he wants one in the garden, I even made a beach hut shaped pillow for him that I entered into the Chertsey Show that got 1st place. So when he came home from the garden center with two beach hut shaped bird boxes it was not a great surprise. The only problem was that they were a boring shade of cream, not the most aesthetically pleasing.

So I was presented with two bird boxes and two pots of paint and told to paint it like the cushion I had made as my Dad loved it (enough that he refuses to use it!).

beach-hut-bird-box-with-paint

It was rather tricky to work out which bits to paint first as the cream wasn’t thick enough to cover the blue. So liberal use of masking tape was used, especially for the stripes on the front. It took a while as I had to spend quite a lot of time waiting for the paint to dry before doing the next bit and each bit required two coats.

But now they are finished!

Here’s the cushion I made next to one of the finished boxes.

Both boxes are now outside, awaiting the spring and the nesting birds. Lets hope the birds love them and use them lots and the boxes weather well.

Maternal love – #FolksyFriday – 24th March 2017

Maternal love folksyfriday

Mother’s Day , or Mothering Sunday, is the 26th of March this year. Mothers of any age around the country are getting shown the love that they deserve from their children (whether they are still children or grown up adults) by receiving breakfast in bed, flowers, chocolate and all manner of housework related surprises. With any luck the love will be expressed all through the year, not just on this specific day.

Love your mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers all year round.
